Anybody else want a Christmas card from me?

I’m sending out holiday cards to my Tumblrbros, including in-character cards (from any character I write/RP to any same-series character of your choice, whether you write/RP them or not). All you have to do is drop an address in my askbox and specify which characters you’d like. (You need not include your real name. I can address the card to your character; it should still get there just fine.)

(I hope this doesn’t seem, uh, creepy. Even though it kind of is, I guess. I promise I won’t mail you fingernail clippings or anything. XD I just tend not to receive many cards myself, and in the years where I didn’t have local friends, that shit was lonely. So I like sending cards.)

I may opt to doodle in your card and you can’t stop me. >8D

Q: How could Aang be the best avatar when instead of facing his destiny he took off and left all of the airbenders to die and let the war go on for a hundred years?
Fair question. But unfortunately you’re using historical hindsight to level charges that aren’t actually valid.
Aang didn’t know the Fire Nation were planning a genocidal attack on his people. Aang didn’t know Gyasto was planning on keeping him safe. Aang had no idea that flying out of that window would mean the death of all his people. He didn’t know that a storm would keep him from the world for 100 years.
He was the youngest person ever to be told he was the Avatar. An event that ostracized him from all his friends. He was an outcast, and the only person in the world that stayed closed to him, Gyasto, was going to be torn away from him. So he ran. That’s his character weakness. Aang runs from his problems. And it has disastrous consequenes. But you can’t blame Aang for the Fire Nation committing genocide. Those soldiers are the ones that murdered all the children and peaceful Air Nomads, not Aang.
What makes Aang a great Avatar is he overcame his weakeness. Throughout the series he comes to accept his destiny. This 12 year old guy accepts the fate of the world on his shoulders and faces the embodiment of the ideology that murdered his people and deals with him justly. Aang is a great Avatar because of the circumstances he was presented with. Not only was he unprepared, out of touch the morality of the modern world and dealing with problems 100 years in the making, he did this all at the age of 12. He fucked up back in the past, but that tiny mistake which had huge unimaginable consequences, he was able to get past it and literally save the world. If that doesn’t make a great Avatar, I don’t know what will.

This has never changed..I don’t think it ever will. I hate this little bastard more than anyone in the show (well, except for Ozai maybe..)

I hated him the moment he acted against an old man that was Fire Nation like a big bully. He’s just a racist loser that lives in a treehouse. At first,…

he did help after he was hypnotized … he just had a rough childhood like azula, zuko, amon

what I meant is he never stopped hating Fire Nation and firebenders, at least from what I remember. He had a rough childhood yeah but he was obsessive and didn’t want to make any progress with himself.

lol the poinies on your page xD … he tried until he saw uncle and zuko firebending … happens

lol I’m sorry if they are like..super annoying. XD; But yeah, if he really tried he should have figured “They were Fire Nation..? But they were good people. Maybe not all Firebenders are bad.” but he didn’t have this outlook, he was just a hateful bastard. I guess its weird I can LOVE Azula but not Jet. Jet just..didn’t interest me in the slightest. xD

I like Jet for the fact that he’s got flaws - flaws that don’t just magically disappear within an episode or two. That’s what real flaws are like; they take time and work to get past, and not everyone does get past them. In that sense, Jet is an excellent character.

On the other hand, he’s also kind of a total douchebag.

And having known a few people who were as bigoted and as stubbornly against person growth as Jet, I can safely say that I wouldn’t actually want to be friends with him. It’s really sad that he couldn’t move past his bigotry after having a positive experience with Zuko, but sometimes people are really in love with having someone to blame for everything.

Anyway, just goes to show that “good character” doesn’t always equal “good person.”

An oldie, but goodie… We made this silly little video for the Avatar panel at the 2008 San Diego Comic Con. It occurred to me that the only versions out there on YouTube were videotaped from the crowd, so I thought I’d post a clean version here (if one can refer to this as “clean”).

Now, I don’t want to cast aspersions or hurt any feelings, but for some of you I feel the need to explain that this is all a joke.

joke |jōk|
noun

a thing that someone says to cause amusement or laughter, esp. a story with a funny punchline: she was in a mood to tell jokes.
• a trick played on someone for fun.

Who’s going to San Diego Comic Con this year? It is coming up fast. We’re cooking up a really cool panel that, while not a unique format, is different from anything we’ve offered in the past. Looking forward to seeing you there!

This is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

I’ve mentioned this before, but the thing I love most about this scene is that Ozai is breathing fire at Aang. He’s *still* trying to win.

I’m sorry I’m distracted by what I think is Ozai’s boner (or just some pants folds…)

oh my god raptorix apologize to me for drawing my eternal attention to his crotch

Toph’s blindness was one of the most excellently handled aspects of AtLA because it wasn’t treated like a disability. So often in shows (and especially children’s animation) disabled characters are limited to apperances in “very special episodes” where the main characters have to learn a lesson that these people are capable “in spite of” their handicaps, like that episode of Kim Possible wherein Kim constantly stumbles over herself around Felix. This approach is often just as insulting as making them the butt of jokes, because it’s patronizing and it limits the amount of roles disabled characters are allowed to have.

Avatar challenged that stereotype with Teo, and then sent a giant middle finger its way by introducing Toph. She’s turned what would otherwise be a disability into an advantage, and she’s not afraid to crack jokes about it. She functions well enough that the other characters often forget that she is blind, but at the same time it’s an integral part of her bending and allows her to be the greatest earthbender ever. It sends a powerful message that having a physical disability does not make you less of a person, and often affords you a unique perspective that the so-called “normal” people never get to experience.

One of the many reasons I love this show.

Oh hey, this should be on my blog again, because Toph is the best thing.
